While children of this age can't voluntarily participate in their hearing tests, there are several reflexive responses children have to sound that can be seen.

Behavioral Observational Audiometry (BOA) is hearing testing that looks for these responses.  Typically, two audiologists will work with you and your child.  One will operate the audiometer and the other will look for the following responses to the test signals:

• Startle to loud sounds
• Stopping or starting sucking (you may be asked to bottle feed or nurse your baby during the test)
• Eye blink
