| The outer ear includes the pinna, which collects sounds
and funnels them into the ear canal. Some children with hearing loss will have physical
differences of the pinna. These differences can assist physicians and audiologists in
identifying syndromes that cause hearing loss. As the sound waves enter the ear, the ear
amplifies the frequencies of speech. This natural amplification is called resonance.
Each ear canal has its own resonance, which changes as the ear grows. The ear canal also
protects the middle and inner ear from damage. |
