Purpose: Over the past 10 years in clinical practice, I have noticed a disturbing trend.  Parents of Deaf and Hard of Hearing children are not getting complete and current information from their providers.  The very existence of this and other websites, as well as numerous e-mail listservs has grown from a need for education that has not been fulfilled by the professional community.  This survey attempts to better define the problem so that Position Statements may be drafted to establish standards of professional preparation (graduate school curricula) and clinical practice. Audience: This survey is designed to assess the level of awareness of parents. The first group of respondents will be those with access to this website and the various listservs it will be advertised on.  This will, by definition, be a biased sample.  Upon request, copies of this survey will be mailed for distribution and we will manually enter the data.  It is our desire to provide a sample that truly represents the needs of parents across geographic and socio-economic boundaries.  Return to Top

Funding: This survey is privately funded by the editor of EDEN - The Electronic Deaf Education Network.  No monetary support will be solicited or accepted.  In-kind donations of time, particularly with respect to survey distribution and collection, are welcomed and appreciated.  Depending on the size and heterogeneity of the sample, these data may be used as the basis for a Doctoral dissertation by the author.  Return to Top

Reporting: As noted above, these data and a solution may be proposed as a Doctoral dissertation.  Should that not be accepted, the results will be submitted to professional and consumer publications in the fields of audiology, education and speech-language pathology.  Return to Top

Instructions: This survey will ask for your level of awareness and understanding of many issues related to your child's hearing loss and treatment.  Please read each question carefully.  For each topic, you will be asked to rate your level of understanding and the source of that information using a 5-point scale as follows:

    1- No understanding/awareness

    2- Awareness, but no understanding

3- Awareness and some very basic understanding

4- Awareness and a good understanding as it relates to your child

5- Awareness and mastery of the topic (you can explain it to others)

If you have more than one child with hearing loss, please complete a separate survey for each child.
